Reading the Fathers: Epistle To Diognetus

Today, we read The Epistle of Mathetes to Diognetus. Virtually nothing is known about the sender, “Mathetes”, except that he was “a disciple of the Apostles.” It has been speculated that the author was a catechumen of St. Paul (or one of his associates), but there is nothing to support that claim. Nothing is known of the recipient, Diognetus. This letter is probably the earliest example we have of apologetics (defense of the faith).
