Top Ten Lists For and Against a Historical Adam

The excitement started off earlier today when Kevin DeYoung posted ‘10 Reasons to Believe in a Historical Adam‘.  James McGrath and Joel Watts have both responded with their own lists on why DeYoung is wrong.

I think both Watts and McGrath make some pretty good arguments. What say you?

  1. The thing that sticks out to me is that while I agree in substance with McGrath and Watts, DeYoung’s writing is more interesting and powerful in a lot of ways. If nothing else, these lists demonstrate the difficulty of writing cogent, persuasive prose in a “top ten” format.

Can you imagine how differently things would appear if DeYoung had instead just written a mini-essay on why he believes in a historical Adam and the others had responded in kind? Then we’d get arguments and counter-arguments instead of an upping of the ante with clever top 10 lists that distract from what is really being discussed.
