Inclusive Language: How Far Is Too Far

Let me just preface this post by saying I am not a fan of inclusive language.  I think it makes for clumsy sentences (eg God sent God’s Son…).  While I’m not a fan, I do see the use of inclusive language in a scholarly/academic setting.

In an effort to purge all references to gender in the Bible, I think that some have gone too far.  A perfect example of this is the United Church of Christ’s constitutional amendment that would remove the reference to God as “heavenly Father” from their governing documents.  The resolution was approved by the UCC’s General Synod and now goes to the Conferences.  Two-thirds of the Conferences need to approve the amendment for them to take effect.
