Along with the beatification of Pope John Paul II this Sunday, a small amount of the blood collected prior to his death will be “exposed as a holy relic.”

As if this story couldn’t get stranger, the Vatican had to issue a statement stating why the blood was still in liquid form.

The Vatican’s statement, presumably hoping to dispel any thoughts of supernatural explanation, noted that the blood remains in a liquid state, due to the presence of an “anticoagulant” at the time of collection.
