NCC Responds to Glenn Beck

The Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon, general secretary of the ecumenical National Council of Churches commented this weekend,

How many of you think that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is a better theologian than Glenn Beck?

He went on to say,

My point is not to take cheap shots at an unworthy target, but rather to affirm that social justice is at the very heart of the gospel, a mark of faithfulness to the One who taught us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

While some religious leaders, such as Rev. Kinnamon, and several bloggers, myself included, have defended social justice, others have taken a different approach saying salvation was Christ’s primary mission. I would agree with that approach. Like I’ve said before, we do works, including social justice, because of our salvation, not to earn it.
