The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009, permitting same-sex couples to marry in the District of Columbia, went into effect Wednesday despite last minute attempts to from taking effect.
The Supreme Court refused to issue a stay citing that the Supreme Court does not intervene in local matters.
At least one church, Dumbarton United Methodist Church in Georgetown, has stated they will conduct same-sex marriages, going against the denominations ban on same-sex marriages.
Other church organization have taken other steps to comply with the new law. Catholic Charities will no longer be offering benefits to employee’s spouses.
