Intelligence and Belief

I’ve seen this appear several places over the past few weeks (here and here).

So I will ask the same question here. Is there a connection between belief and intelligence? There definitely seems to be a correlation between the two, but as Neece  points out on her blog, correlation does not necessitate causation.

My concern with this chart is how are they determining the average IQ of a state? I’m going to assume that not everyone has had an IQ test (I’m 33 and to my knowledge, I’ve never had an IQ test). It also appears as if the statistics don’t take into account the educational systems of a state (South Carolina, for example, has a very poor educational system).

I’m not completely sold on this.  I think there’s a stronger correlation between poverty, education, and the crime rate.
